After-School Instructor – I.S. 5 (Part-Time; Seasonal)

Instructors will plan and facilitate age-appropriate activities, tailoring curriculum to different skill levels, and developing lesson plans that foster growth and learning. The ideal candidate will be proficient in a variety of areas, including literacy, STEAM, arts & crafts, and leadership development. Instructors will collaborate with fellow staff to create a supportive and enriching environment for youth.

This position is part of Youth and Family Services at Sunnyside Community Services, which offers a continuum of programs including pre-kindergarten, after-school programs for elementary and middle school students, high school job readiness and career preparation, enrichment programming, and Adult and Immigrant Services.

Responsibilities  

  • Supervise a group of participants along with the Group Leader and provide for the safety and well-being of participants at all times.
  • Provide homework help and track completion of participant assignments.
  • Tailor the curriculum to meet the needs of students at different instructional levels.
  • Develop and submit age-appropriate lesson plans in a timely manner. 
  • Prepare materials and examples in advance to support student understanding during activities. 
  • Lead, plan, and prepare special projects for community or program events.
  • Develop and guide projects that can be showcased periodically to families and the community, highlighting youth achievements and program impact.
  • Meet regularly with supervisors and other staff members to share best practices and address challenges. 
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and sanitization of the program space; ensure program supplies are in good condition. 
  • Ensure all health and safety protocols and policies are followed. 
  • Assist in the training and professional development of Group Leaders and Youth Workers.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned. 

Qualifications 

  • Must be 18 years old or older. 
  • Must be available Monday – Friday during program hours (2:30 – 6 pm). Limited flexibility is available to accommodate school schedules.
  • High school diploma required; some college of relevant degree preferred.  
  • Teaching experience with a minimum of two years’ experience in an after-school environment.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines. 
  • This position begins after clearances and requires online training to be complete.
  • After-school staff are expected to be committed to the position until the end of the school year in June.   

Compensation: $18 – $20 per hour 

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 2:30 – 6 pm. Limited opportunity for additional hours based on programming.
