Assistant Cook

SCS is seeking an Assistant Cook to work at the Older Adult Center which provides essential services to older adults in a community-based setting, including offering nutritious, freshly prepared meals served daily to older adults.

The Assistant Cook prepares and serves congregate meals for older adults and UPK students, maintains a safe and sanitary kitchen, assists with inventory and supplies, provides coverage for the Head Cook as needed, and ensures compliance with DOHMH and NYC Aging standards.

SCS is a multi-service, community-based organization providing a broad range of services to approximately 16,000 people each year, of all ages.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparing, cooking, and serving congregate meals in compliance with NYC Aging and DOHMH standards, ensuring meals are served on schedule.
  • Receive, store, rotate, and help manage food inventory and kitchen supplies.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen, including equipment, utensils, storage areas, and floors.
  • Assist with training kitchen volunteers and maintaining daily food temperature logs.
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Provides coverage for Head Cook.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent life experience.
  • Minimum two years of food preparation experience, preferably with group meal service.
  • Valid NYC Food Protection Certificate or ability to obtain one.
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with staff, volunteers, and older adults.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
