Bilingual Group Leader (Part-Time)

This position will be a part of Youth and Family Services at Sunnyside Community Services. Our SONYC program works with families and youth in transitional housing, some of whom are newcomers, and we seek individuals with empathy and understanding for vulnerable populations. The After-School Group Leader is primarily responsible for the overall supervision and well-being of the participants, academic support, and fostering social emotional learning in the group setting.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety of all program participants, including daily attendance tracking.
  • Assist instructors and subcontractors in the implementation of lessons and activities.
  • Provide program support during high-risk times like arrival, snack time, and dismissal.
  • Provide constant supervision to assigned groups of school age children.
  • Provide academic assistance in the form of homework help.
  • Supervise bathroom breaks and provide minor first aid as needed.
  • Maintain program space and activity areas. Ensure program materials are cared for and returned to proper storage areas.
  • Motivate and maintain active involvement of all program participants.
  • Attend all required meetings and training courses.
  • Work with assigned team members to collectively create a safe, brave, and learning space for all assigned participants.
  • Meet regularly with supervisor and other staff members to share best practices and address challenges.
  • Maintain all program documents including medical and behavioral incidents.
  • Based on performance, a summer position may be available at another site to extend employment.  

Qualifications

  • Bilingual: English/ Spanish required.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or graduate from high school by September 1, 2024.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Experience working with children in an after-school or summer camp setting strongly encouraged.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, DOE fingerprinting, and a medical exam. Must be able to provide two letters of recommendation.
  • Ability to work in person – remote options are not available.
  • This position begins after clearances and the required online training is completed.
  • Limited flexibility is available to accommodate school schedules.

Compensation: Starting at $16.00 – $17.00 per hour

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 2:30 – 5:30 pm (15 hours/week) Limited flexibility is available to accommodate school schedules.

Location: Sunnyside Community Services, SONYC at Samaritan Village, Elmhurst, Queens
