High School Academic Support Tutor (Part-Time; Seasonal)

The High School Academic Support Tutor provides small group and one-on-one tutoring to students in high school. This position is a part-time, seasonal position through June 30, 2026, and is potentially renewable. This position follows the NYC Department of Education (DOE) school calendar. As such, there will be work gaps during holidays, breaks, and closures.

Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multi-service, community-based organization providing a broad range of services to approximately 16,000 people each year. Our services include pre-kindergarten and after school programs, college prep and career programs for teens and young adults, supports for immigrant, a vibrant senior center, dedicated home care services, support and assistance for family caregivers, and social adult day program for people with cognitive and physical impairments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide small group and one-on-one tutoring to students in grades 9-12, with emphasis on core high school subjects such as Algebra I, Geometry, Living Environment, and U.S. History.
  • Support students in completing homework assignments, preparing for exams, and reinforcing classroom learning.
  • Adapt instruction to meet diverse learning styles and academic needs.
  • Track student progress and communicate updates to the Program Director and/or classroom teachers as needed.
  • Encourage positive study habits, time management, and academic confidence in students.
  • Assist with the development of enrichment activities that strengthen academic skills and support overall program goals.
  • Uphold a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and professional development sessions as scheduled.
  • Plan and facilitate purposeful and engaging lesson plans to meet the academic concerns of students.
  • Facilitate outreach and retention efforts, including creating/distributing marketing materials and registration forms, and conducting information sessions about program offerings.
  • Serve as a positive role model and uphold professional behavior.
  • Assist with other afterschool program initiatives, projects, and events as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework or degree in education or related field strongly encouraged.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one core subject (Algebra I, Geometry, Living Environment, or U.S. History).
  • Ability to work with students in grades 9-12 in both one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Must be available during after-school hours (generally between 3 – 6 pm) on DOE school days.
  • Commitment to maintaining a supportive, respectful, and inclusive environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or current enrollment in a college program, preferably in education, math, science, or humanities.
  • Prior experience tutoring or teaching high school students.
  • Familiarity with New York State Regents curriculum and exam preparation.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish a plus)

Contract: Part-time; seasonal. Contract expires June 30, 2026; potentially renewable contract.

Compensation: $19 – $23 per hour

Work Location: Aviation High School and/or Queens Technical High School in Long Island City, Queens.

Schedule: 3 – 6 pm; Monday – Friday; 15-20 hours per week. Some evenings and/or weekends may be required for special events.
