Program Assistant, ESOL (Part-Time; Temporary)

Reporting to the Assistant Director, ESOL, the Program Assistant, ESOL is responsible for assisting in ESOL program implementation and development in collaboration with the ESOL program team. We provide ESOL instruction to over 450 students annually. Our approach includes in-person learning strategies, a whole-person approach allowing students to access services internally, and a commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Program Assistant will ensure the successful operation of ESOL programming to assist those lacking English proficiency in English. 

Sunnyside Community Services Adult and Immigrant Service team offers free English language classes to immigrant community members, assists in providing resources and benefits, provides free legal immigration consultations, engages with community members on public health initiatives, and advocates alongside and on behalf of immigrants and low-income adults.

Schedule: Part-time; May 8 – June 30, 2026; 8:30 am – 4 pm; in-person.

Responsibilities

Program Planning and Implementation – ESOL

  • Assist in daily operation of ESOL programming including registration, orientation, class setup, and field trips.
  • Assist in registration, conducting intake interviews, and pre/post test program participants.
  • Ensure classrooms are properly set up based on group size, with appropriate furniture and instructional materials available.
  • Provide ongoing support to instructors by troubleshooting classroom needs, sourcing supplies, and coordinating with SCS facilities or IT when necessary.
  • Communicate with students regarding programming and other service needs in person, via emails, or texts.
  • Assist in student recruitment as needed.

Student Support, Communication, and Outreach

  • Proactively conduct outreach to students who miss classes and document reasons for absences.
  • Communicate with students regarding program participation, attendance expectations, and available services.
  • Support a positive and responsive learning environment through consistent follow-up and engagement

Data Collection, Tracking and Reporting

  • Collect, maintain, and track comprehensive paper and/or electronic files as necessary for contractual reporting.
  • Collect, maintain, and track programmatic data and resources, keeping data up to date including daily attendance records and participant demographic information using funder-mandated and internal database and monitoring tools.
  • Support Program Director, ESOL with preparation for program audits and reporting.
  • Assist with other tasks that arise in support of Adult and Immigrant Services daily operation and growth.

Other

  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bilingual; able to read, write, and speak at least one additional language. Spanish preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field in-progress or completed, plus 1-2 years’ related experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication.
  • Flexibility, patience, resourcefulness, and a willingness to learn and ability to work independently and creatively.
  • Best Plus 3.0 certified highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of DYCD NYC Rise, ASISTS, and Salesforce highly preferred.
