SYEP Project-Based Learning Instructor (Part-Time; Seasonal)

The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Project-Based Learning Instructor will facilitate engaging workshops and activities for 14–15-year-olds, model positive youth development, and guide students through project-based learning experiences, all while ensuring a fun and effective learning environment.

SCS is a multi-service, community-based organization providing a broad range of services to approximately 16,000 people each year. Our services include pre-kindergarten and after school programs; college prep and career programs for teens and young adults; supports for immigrants; a vibrant senior center, dedicated home care services, support and assistance for family caregivers, and social adult day program for people with cognitive and physical impairments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead workshops and activities, adapting to the interests and learning styles of students.
  • Plan and implement project-based learning/youth development curriculum.
  • Provide guidance and support to students throughout their PBL projects, fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Establish classroom norms and expectations, manage student behavior, and develop rapport with students.
  • Maintain files and necessary documentation of student project-based learning experiences.
  • Conduct regular evaluation and assessment of project-based learning activities.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning experiences.
  • Attend job related trainings/workshops.
  • Communicate with administration/supervisor regarding participant engagement, attendance, and supportive service needs.
  • Must be creative and motivating to ensure all program goals are met along with good participant attendance.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and manner that reflects the high standards of the program you serve and represent.
  • Assist in all SYEP-related program operations and other duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Able to meet daily/weekly deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Regularly communicate with leadership or assigned designees on assigned students.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree preferred in relevant field; high school diploma required.
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred) strongly desired.
  • Meet background check and DOE Fingerprint Verification.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work well with diverse personalities and populations.
  • Good multi-tasking abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written & orally.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with high school students or academic programs.
  • Ability to be proactive and work independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain a welcoming and effective environment for all participants.
  • Computer literate with knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.), and online platforms such as Google Classroom and Zoom required.

Reports to: Program Specialist for Career Exploration

Schedule: Monday – Friday, up to 20 hours per a week, late June through mid-August

Hourly Rate: $21.00 – $23.00

Work Location: Aviation High School (Long Island City, Queens)
