  • On Monday, June 8, students from PS150Q walked a mile to raise awareness and funds in support of Alzheimer’s Disease programs. After walking, students tied purple ribbons to the fence in front of the school, near a number of handwritten signs.  Sixth grade students have been participating in service learning projects at Sunnyside Community Services’ Social Adult Day Program for individuals with Alzheimer’s. Elizabeth Gronke, interim director of the program, also informed the students about Alzheimer’s at a recent school assembly. According to Ms. Rosella Giorgi, teacher at PS 150 and organizer of the event, there was amazing support for this effort from the students, parents and the local community. More than $2,000 was raised for various Alzheimer’s-related efforts.

  • Volunteers Spring into Action at SCS

Thanks to New York Cares and support from Morgan Stanley, over 100 members of the Center for Active Older Adults enjoyed painting and potting their own personalized flowerpots. Morgan Stanley volunteers engaged members during their artistic endeavors, and helped as needed. Several of the volunteers worked to bring a bloom of color to the planters outside our headquarters.

  • Mayor Bill de Blasio visited Sunnyside UP, our pre-Kindergarten program, to talk to the children and their parents about the importance of Universal Pre-K (UPK) and early childhood education.

NY1 featured the visit in a story you can watch here.

On hand to show their support were New York State Senator Michael Gianaris, New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, and New York State Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, shown below with Mayor de Blasio and SCS Executive Director Judy Zangwill.
